The Senegalese Agency for Space Studies (ASES) laid the foundation stone for Senegal’s first Astronomical Observatory (OAS) on Thursday, November 13, 2025.

Located in Khombole, in the Thiès region, the future observatory aims to be a leading center for research, training, and scientific innovation. “It will house a 600 mm main telescope, four C14 telescopes, an Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics Training, as well as modern research facilities. Fully remotely controlled, the OAS will allow the global scientific community to access the African sky from Senegal. This unprecedented technological capability positions the country as a key player in astronomical research in West Africa,” noted Maram Kaire, Director General of ASES.

He added that the establishment of this infrastructure is part of the mission to develop the national space sector. It aims to meet the growing demand for training in astronomy, astrophysics, and space science, while inspiring young people in Senegal.

The Senegal Astronomical Observatory will also contribute to strengthening international cooperation through partnerships with institutions such as the IAU Office of Astronomy for Education, the IAU Office of Astronomy for Development, and the IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach.
